Popup Steps

Popup steps are used to draw your users attention to featured text. Unlike regular step balloons, Popup steps are not attached to an element but appear in the center of the page. Popup Steps can be placed anywhere within a Walk-Thru. Note: Popup steps are not the same as popup windows.

Let's Talk A Bit More

When building a Walk-Thru, use a Popup to provide additional information to your user. Similar to ShoutOuts, Popup steps are not associated with an element; Popups can be placed anywhere within the Walk-Thru. They can be inserted to a Walk-Thru as you are initially building or added after the Walk-Thru is complete. Create Step Play Rules in the Engagement tab to set the Popup to play only under certain conditions.

Popup steps are commonly used to enhance the user experience by communicating a message about your site or the process they are completing in the Walk-Thru. Popups can also be used for promotional purposes.

Examples of uses for Popup steps include:
  • Use a success Popup at the end of a Walk-Thru
  • Place a welcome Popup at the beginning of an AutoPlay Walk-Thru when they arrive on your site
  • Create a mini-menu Popup by linking to other Walk-Thrus in the Rich Text Editor

How It Works

When WalkMe plays a Walk-Thru, it plays through the step list starting from the first step. The Popup will appear in the order in which it appears in the step list. Popup steps are a Super Step and can be found in the By Use Case tab. If the Popup is configured with a Step Play Rule, the step will play if the rule is true. WalkMe will check the Popup’s appearance settings and play the step.

Create and Customize Popups

After selecting Popup Step from the Super Step By Use Case tab, the Popup Step Options Menu will open. Note that you will not select an element as the Popup appears in the center of the page, not related to an element. Fine tune the position in the Appearance tab if desired.
  • Interaction tab
    • Name: Main message of the Popup
    • Text: Additional information
    • Rich Text Editor: Change the text size, style, color, add dynamic text or a video and more
    • Display X on Balloon: It is recommended not to remove the X from the balloon
    • Spotlight: When the Spotlight is on, the user will not be able to interact with other elements on the page
    • Show buttons:
      • Next/Done: Next if there is a step after the Popup or Done if it is the last step in the Walk-Thru
      • Start button: if it is the first step in a Walk-Thru
      • Back: Go back to the previous step, or Cancel (to end the Walk-Thru
  • Behavior: Create a Step Play Rule which will define how and when the step will be played
  • Appearance: Alter the Z-index, modify position on screen, or select the delay time before which a Popup will play or its duration on screen
  • Notes: Collaborate with teammates by including notes about this step.

Popup Tips and Tricks

  • Use a Popup when you add a Survey to the Player Menu: Simply create a Walk-Thru with one Popup Step and add an Open Survey Super Step
  • Delay Autoplay Walk-Thrus: Give your user some time to orient themselves before launching an Autoplay Walk-Thru by adding a Popup as the first step and setting a delay for 20-60 seconds. This gives the user enough time to look over the interface before starting the Walk-Thru.
  • Create a Mini-Menu: Use the Rich Text Editor to link to other Walk-Thrus
  • Customize a Popup: Using CSS

Try it Out

Add a Popup step to the end of a Walk-Thru congratulating the user on completing the process and suggesting next steps. Link to relevant Walk-Thrus in the text of the balloon using the Rich Text Editor.
