WalkMe Can’t Find an Element on the Page

Last Updated May 20, 2026

Issue

After selecting an element for a step and playing a Smart Walk-Thru, WalkMe shows the message: "The element is not present on this page."

Solution

Try the fixes below in order, starting with re-selecting the element before adjusting any settings.

Re-selecting the element

A step won't play or a launcher won't appear if WalkMe can't find the element it's connected to. Start here.

  1. Open the step, launcher, or SmartTip in the editor
  2. Select Re-select element
  3. Re-select the element on the page
  4. Try playing your content again

Ignoring the element ID

If the element has a variable ID that changes on every page load, WalkMe can't reliably identify it. To fix this:

  1. Go to the Selected Element tab in the step options
  2. Check Element ID (if ID changes on the page load)

Ignoring the element position

If the element's location on the screen changes — for example, when a user has a different screen size — WalkMe may not recognize it. To fix this:

  1. Go to the Selected Element tab in the step options
  2. Check Position (if element's location changes)

Ignoring the text within the element

If the element's text changes — for example, on a multilingual site or when the label is dynamic — WalkMe may not recognize it. To fix this:

  1. Go to the Selected Element tab in the step options
  2. Check Text within the element
