WalkMe Safe Switch

Last Updated May 18, 2026

Brief Overview

Safe Switch is a performance monitoring feature that protects the end-user experience by automatically shutting down WalkMe if it detects that WalkMe is consuming excessive site resources. It is designed for complex sites or resource-intensive implementations where WalkMe's overlay could potentially impact site performance.

How It Works

Once enabled, Safe Switch monitors the execution time of WalkMe's main transactions. If a single transaction exceeds the predefined threshold of 1 second, Safe Switch takes action based on the configured mode.

Modes

  • Active: WalkMe shuts itself down for that user's page visit if a performance impact is detected
  • Audit: WalkMe sends performance data to WalkMe servers for analysis without shutting down
  • Combined: Both Active and Audit modes run simultaneously

Audit Data

When running in Audit or Combined mode, the following data is sent to WalkMe servers for analysis:

  • End-user identifier (as configured in WalkMe)
  • Browser type and version
  • Operating system
  • IP address
  • Mobile device (true/false)
  • URL and page title
  • Time since page load

Audit data is sent to:

https://ec.walkme.com/event/backEvent

Deployment Requirements

Before enabling Safe Switch, the following confirmations are required:

  • Approval to activate the feature on your account
  • Acknowledgment that performance data will be sent to WalkMe servers
  • Confirmation to publish the settings to the target environment
